The Parenting Readiness Assessment™ measures the six things children actually feel in a home — and shows you, honestly and without judgment, where you are strong today and where you can grow stronger.
Start here
Almost every caregiver we meet asks the same private question before a child arrives: am I actually ready for this? The question is usually answered with a feeling — a wave of confidence, or a wave of doubt. Feelings are poor instruments.
Readiness is made of specific, nameable, learnable skills: how you handle your own stress, how consistently you follow through, how quickly you repair after conflict, whether a child can predict what tomorrow looks like in your home. Skills can be measured. And anything you can measure, you can build.
What changes when you measure it
Without a measure
“I hope I'm ready.”
“I'll figure it out when the time comes.”
“Everyone says you're never ready.”
All true. None of it is actionable, and none of it helps a child on a hard Tuesday night.
With a measure
“My patience is strong. My routines are not.”
“I have love. I need a support network.”
“I need to work on responding instead of reacting.”
Same person. Same honesty. Now there are three things to actually work on.
What we measure
Houston Strong's readiness model is organized around six research-grounded pillars. You will answer three honest questions in each.

Delivered the moment you finish
ONE
A 0–100 score with your tier, plus a pillar-by-pillar breakdown showing your strongest and weakest area by name.
TWO
Which of the five caregiver types you lead with — your natural strengths, and the specific blind spot that comes with them.
THREE
Three to four personalized growth areas drawn from your actual answers, with a this-week and this-month action plan.
The assessment
There is no passing grade and no wrong answer. The only answer that costs you anything is a flattering one.

Step 8 of 8
The Parenting Readiness Assessment™ is an educational self-reflection tool. It is not a clinical, psychological, or diagnostic instrument, and it is not used to approve, deny, or evaluate any placement, licensing, or custody decision.
That is not a verdict. It is a starting line. Awareness is the first step toward growth, and many extraordinary parents began exactly where you are today.
What matters most is your willingness to grow, to learn, and to ask for help when you need it. Houston Strong Children Services is here to support you on your journey.
“Great parenting doesn't begin when a child arrives — it begins with the person you become beforehand.”
Every child deserves this
Preparing yourself mentally and emotionally is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child. It takes five minutes to find out where to begin.
